Coming into the Digital Age
In today's society technology takes literacy to a whole new level. To be literate in the digital age, one must know what the symbols in the image to the left are. Are you scratching your head? You are not alone! The types of media have grown exponentially from Google to YouTube to Twitter. Why has digital literacy become a phenomenon? The reason is that "multimodality is more pervasive, diverse, and important today than ever before" (Gee & Hayes, 2011). Thus, technology and multimedia allow people to interact with text, speech and manipulate it. It has allowed for people to have a voice as one can anonymous and yet reach millions of people all over the world INSTANTLY! That is the key.
Overtime, literacy (reading, writing) have adapted to meet the needs of society. We now live a fast-paced world where we need information stat! Thus, pen and paper, as well as sending letters through the mail simply were not acceptable anymore. How will the needs of future generations shape literacy? Will it be digitally? Or will the digital age be a thing of the past? Let's blog about it! Then, again, let's post a tweet!
