Schema Theory
Schema Theory is a way that the brain organizes the information and experiences that one has in a way that when the information needs to retrieved, it can be accessed easily. In other words, it helps you make sense of what you are reading/hearing by making sense of it through your past knowledge/experiences. For example, if you are reading an article about Pizza Hut's pizza you would use your schema to help you understand. Your schema would go back to the file drawer in your mind under the Pizza Hut file. In the file would the be time you went to Pizza Hut with your family and you ordered a pepperoni pizza. It was the best pizza that you ever had. Thus, when you are reading the article, you would say how great the pizza is a Pizza Hut and make that connection with the author because you too had experienced it! However, if you had never been to pizza hut, you would not understand what the author was talking about.
Thus, schema helps a person comprehend what they are reading.. Literacy is not just the ability to read and write, but it also involves comprehension. If we comprehend the text, then we are more able interact and make meaning of the text.
