The Matthew Effect
The Matthew Effect is relevant to education because those who read and have more experience with reading are going to be better readers. Those who do not read and have little to no experiences with reading will not be good readers, or readers at all.
Thus, in schools, we must provide children with numerous reading experiences because our classrooms will be made up of students who have had rich reading experiences and students who have poor reading experiences.
In my classroom, children have time to read to self, read to a partner, listen to stories on the computer, listen to stories that I read aloud, listen and read poetry, as well as read their own stories that they write. In addition, there is a program at my school called, Read to Me. We can recommend students who could benefit from the extra reading time. Thus, it is important that all students have a lot of reading time throughout the day.
